World Cross-Country Championships 2026: African dominance and a Spanish presence

The 46th World Cross-Country Championships took place on Saturday, January 10, in Tallahassee, Florida. In the 10 km men’s race, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo defended his crown in 28:18 ahead of Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi and Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo. The team standings were topped by Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, while Spain, with Thierry Ndikumwenayo as its top finisher (eighth), finished just outside the medals.

In the women’s race, Kenya’s Agnes Jebet Ngetich claimed gold in 31:28, beating Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek and Ethiopia’s Senayet Getachew. Ethiopia again won the team title, ahead of Kenya and Uganda. In the U20 categories, African athletes also shone: Frankline Kibet led the men’s 8 km and Marta Alemayo took the women’s 6 km.

  • Highlights: Africa swept both senior titles for the fifth consecutive time.
  • Spanish angle: Thierry Ndikumwenayo placed eighth in the men’s race and María Forero led the women’s squad.
  • Fun fact: This was the first World Cross-Country held in the United States since 1992; the Apalachee Park course featured sand, water and muddy sections that tested runners’ skills.

Houston Marathon and Half Marathon 2026: fast times and close records

On January 11 Houston once again showed why it’s one of the fastest races in the U.S. In the half marathon, Habtom Samuel of Eritrea won in 59:01 just two months after clinching the NCAA cross-country title, while Alex Maier finished fourth in 59:23—just six seconds off the American record. In the women’s half, Ethiopia’s Fentaye Belayneh outkicked Tsigie Gebreselama to win in 1:04:49; Taylor Roe was fourth in 1:06:20.

In the marathon, Zouhair Talbi crossed the line in 2:05:45—the third-fastest time ever by an American on home soil—followed by Adane Gebre (2:06:16) and Shadrack Kimining (2:07:35). Britain’s Calli Hauger-Thackery won the women’s race in 2:24:17 ahead of Sara Hall and Biruktayit Degefa. These times confirm that the Texas course remains ideal for chasing personal bests.

  • Interesting note: the top American in the half marathon missed the national record by only six seconds.
  • Takeaway: Several U.S. athletes made the top 20 in the marathon, underscoring the depth of American distance running.

Albert Korir suspended: the fight against doping continues

On January 12 the Athletics Integrity Unit announced the provisional suspension of Kenya’s Albert Korir—winner of the 2021 New York City Marathon—after he tested positive for CERA, a synthetic form of EPO. Korir, 31, has podium finishes in Boston and New York and a personal best of 2:06:57. If the violation is confirmed, his recent results could be annulled.

Korir’s case adds to a growing list of Kenyan runners sanctioned for doping. According to the AIU, Kenya leads the table of sanctioned athletes (140 of 683 active cases), ahead of India and Russia. These figures reignite the debate on stronger testing and education programs for elite runners.

  • Advice for recreational runners: your health and sporting integrity matter more than any time. Rely on structured training and good nutrition to improve sustainably.

Helio Glasses and augmented reality: tech innovation from CES 2026

Las Vegas’s CES 2026 unveiled a treat for tech-savvy runners: Amazfit introduced its Helio Glasses, an augmented-reality eyewear concept designed for runners and cyclists. According to the official announcement, the lightweight glasses integrate a minimalist heads-up display that projects pace, heart-rate, distance and navigation directly into your line of sight. The prototype uses impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses, is water- and sweat-proof and can be controlled via buttons on the frame or through a connected watch. Battery life is engineered to last the duration of a full marathon.

Helio Glasses are still a concept, but Amazfit plans a release in the second half of 2026. The development reflects the growing trend toward devices that keep runners focused and safe by reducing the need to check your wrist. In our feature on Helio Glasses you’ll find more details and a comparison with other smart glasses.

  • Key features: real-time data projection, rugged design and compatibility with the Zepp ecosystem.
  • What it means for you: a more immersive experience that could improve posture and pacing.
  • Next steps: the brand expects to launch a preliminary version in the second half of 2026; pricing details are still unknown.
