Athens Marathon 2025: Greece reigns in the birthplace of the marathon

Maratón de Atenas 2025

The marathon returned to its roots in 2025, and Greece celebrated a historic double victory. At the iconic Athens Authentic Marathon, Panagiotis Karaiskos claimed the men’s title in 2:20:10, earning a roaring reception inside the Panathinaikó Stadium. Fellow Greek Konstantinos Stamoulis secured second place in 2:23:24, while Hungary’s Laszlo Tarnai rounded out the podium with 2:23:52. The blend of local and international runners gave the race a truly global feel and underscored the renaissance of Greek distance running.

The women’s race was equally dominated by the hosts. Stamatia Noula cruised to victory in 2:39:28 ahead of Panagiota Vlachaki (2:49:31) and Ourania Rempouli (2:52:07). Finland’s Noora Honkala (2:56:39) and France’s Tala Elajou (2:56:56) completed the top five.

Beyond the stopwatch, running in Athens is a cultural journey. The course retraces the legendary route of the messenger Pheidippides, passing ancient temples, villages and finishing inside the all-marble stadium. In 2025 thousands of runners from over 100 countries took part, drawn by the mix of history and athletic challenge; the organisers also offered 10K and 5K races for those seeking a shorter experience.

The 2025 Athens Marathon proves that, more than 2,500 years after the legend, the passion for running continues to connect the world with the birthplace of the marathon.
