Run Like a Hero Barcelona 2026: running for Phelan-McDermid syndrome research

There are races where the time on the clock matters less than the reason you are standing on the start line. Run Like a Hero Barcelona is one of them.

On Sunday, 18 October 2026, Barcelona will host this charity sporting event organised by the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association for the first time. The event will take place at Westfield La Maquinista, in Barcelona’s Sant Andreu district, bringing together sport, families and solidarity with a very specific goal: raising awareness of Phelan-McDermid syndrome and funds to help continue advancing research.

What is Run Like a Hero?

Run Like a Hero was launched in 2020 by the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association. What began as a virtual race during the pandemic has since grown into a programme of inclusive charity sporting events.

That first virtual edition brought together more than 2,300 participants from 21 countries. Since then, in-person races have been held in different parts of Spain and the initiative has expanded to include other sports as well.

In 2026, the calendar is growing once again, with Barcelona joining the list of cities hosting an in-person event for the first time. The organisers have also set an ambitious fundraising target for this edition: €25,000. Mediolanum Aproxima, Banco Mediolanum’s solidarity initiative, offers the possibility of increasing that amount with an additional €10,000 contribution.

A 5K race and a family walk

The first Run Like a Hero Barcelona has been designed to welcome both runners looking to race and anyone who simply wants to take part in a day of sport for a good cause.

  • 5K race: starts at 9:00 am.
  • 2.5K family walk: starts at 10:00 am.
  • KM 0 charity entry: for anyone who wants to support the cause without taking part in person.

The start will be located at Westfield La Maquinista, Carrer de la Ciutat d’Asunción, 41, Barcelona.

The format makes this a different kind of event from a typical road race focused purely on performance. You can chase a new 5K PB, run alongside friends, or swap racing shoes for a morning walk with the family. Whatever you choose, every entry supports the same cause.

What is Phelan-McDermid syndrome?

Phelan-McDermid syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused, in most cases, by a change affecting chromosome 22 and the SHANK3 gene, which plays an important role in the development and function of the nervous system.

People with Phelan-McDermid syndrome may experience varying degrees of developmental delay, difficulties with speech and communication, intellectual disability and low muscle tone (hypotonia). Some people may also show features associated with autism spectrum disorder, among other symptoms. The condition can affect each person very differently.

Because it is so rare, there is still much to learn about Phelan-McDermid syndrome and potential treatments. This makes scientific research, greater awareness and support for affected people and their families especially important.

That is where the work of the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association, the organisation behind Run Like a Hero, comes in. Every race entry therefore means more than simply covering a distance: the money raised helps to continue advancing research into Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

You can also run from anywhere in the world

The Barcelona race is part of a much wider project. From 17 to 25 October, the Run Like a Hero Global Running Week will also take place, coinciding with the week of International Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Awareness Day on 22 October.

The virtual event lets participants walk, jog or run 5 kilometres from anywhere in the world, at their own pace. It is an opportunity to join the initiative even if you are nowhere near Barcelona or any of the other cities hosting an in-person event.

Key registration dates

If you want to take part in Barcelona and choose the race entry with a T-shirt, there is one date worth remembering: according to the organisers, it must be purchased before 20 September, as the shirts are made to order.

From 21 September onwards, only entries without a T-shirt will remain available, with registration open until 15 October, according to the information currently published by the organisers.

On 18 October, the result is not what matters most

We love races where competition matters, but we also love those where simply standing on the start line already means something.

On 18 October, some runners will arrive at La Maquinista hoping to improve their 5K PB. Others will run alongside friends. Families will complete the 2.5 kilometres together, while others will support the cause from home through a charity entry.

They will all be taking part in the same race.

Because sometimes running a little can help move things forward a long way.
