One opening race does not decide a season, but it can say a great deal about how that season begins. On Sunday 27 September, the 30th Cros de Canet opened the 2026 Maresme Cross-Country Circuit and gave Biel and Martí, the two PLANAS_AGON athletes SnapRace will be following this season, a full and encouraging first day out.

Biel’s result was the clearest headline: he won the U14 category and finished second in the combined race, which also included U16 athletes. Yet Canet was more than a podium. It was a return to the atmosphere of cross-country, a first marker in a long calendar and one of those mornings when each athlete begins to find their place in a season that has only just started.

Biel opens the circuit with a U14 win

Biel raced over 2,800 metres in a start shared by the U14 and U16 categories. He was second across the line in that combined race and first in U14. Those two positions do not conflict: the overall result records the finishing order of everyone in the start, while the category result recognises his placing among athletes of his own age group.

That distinction matters, and it is also the right way to read the performance without overstating it. Winning his category in the first cross-country race of the season is a very positive sign, particularly over a distance and in a format that demand a controlled fast start, an ability to handle uneven ground and racing alongside older athletes. It does not predict December or turn one race into a forecast, but it does offer a solid reference point: Biel began by racing well in a demanding event.

Cross-country has a way of putting feelings in order quickly. No two laps are quite the same, the pace shifts with the ground and position is fought for from the opening metres. That is why a strong September run is also a learning opportunity: it shows what worked, what can be repeated and what can be built in the weeks ahead.

Martí adds another cross-country race day

Martí raced in the 1,700-metre U12 event. At this age, a morning such as Canet cannot be reduced to one line in a results list. The start, reading a course unlike a track, holding effort when the legs begin to tire and being part of a busy race all matter.

An initial count places him around fourth among boys born in his calendar year, but that breakdown has not yet appeared as an official result. For accuracy, we will not present it as a confirmed placing. What is certain is that he completed another cross-country race and now has a useful reference for the circuit ahead: knowing the atmosphere, pinning on a race number again and learning what each course requires are all part of progress, just as much as any finishing position.

Canet: the first stop in a nine-race circuit

The Cros de Canet took place in the Can Misser industrial area, next to the H2O Fitness & Club Canet municipal complex. It opened a nine-race series organised by Gesport, the Maresme Sports Council and the participating towns. The format encourages athletes to look beyond a single morning: the same chip bib works throughout the league, while the season builds experience across different courses, towns and conditions.

That continuity is especially valuable for young athletes. Each cross-country race changes small things: a faster or slower start, drier or softer ground, a distance that asks for better judgement of effort, or a field shared with different categories. Results matter, of course, but the circuit offers repetition and context above all. That makes it possible to learn without treating every Sunday as a final exam.

A start worth celebrating, with perspective

Biel and Martí’s day in Canet leaves clear reasons to be pleased. Biel takes home a U14 victory and second place in the combined race; Martí adds another competitive experience in a new setting. They are different ways to begin, and both fit what September should be: a chance to compete, take stock and keep growing.

The next meeting is the Cros de Santa Susanna on 10 October. Tordera, Calella, Arenys, Llavaneres, Pineda, Malgrat and Alella will follow. Eight races remain, leaving plenty of room for results to move, for easier and tougher days alike, and for each athlete to find their own way forward.

At SnapRace, we will cover that journey with attention to the result and to everything that does not appear in a results table: adapting to each race, the decisions that help athletes compete better and the learning built week by week. Canet was a promising first chapter. Now the season can tell the rest of its story.
