This is not a conventional 10K or an event designed to certify a personal best: there will be no chip timing or official general classification.

That popular, non-timed format changes the strategy. The distance is approximate, the field will be exceptionally dense and the sensible goal for most entrants is to find room, regulate effort and enjoy a route through some of the city’s major avenues. This guide covers the schedule, course, start pens, bib collection, aid, forecast heat and the decisions worth making before entering the start area.

Key facts for the 2026 Nocturna del Guadalquivir

Date: Friday, 25 September 2026.

Start: 10:00 pm on Paseo de las Delicias, beside Glorieta de Buenos Aires.

Pen access: from 9:00 pm through the signposted entrances.

Finish: Paseo de las Delicias, in the same area as the start.

Distance: approximately 8.5km, with kilometre points marked.

Finish closure: midnight, two hours after the start.

Announced participation: a record 26,000 runners.

Timing: no chip, individual results or official general classification.

The participation figure needs one qualification. The published official regulations initially set a 25,000-entry ceiling, while the latest IMD announcement states that 26,000 people will take part and calls it an all-time record. The 26,000 should therefore be read as the event’s announced field, not a finisher count.

A familiar course in the opposite direction

The race starts on Paseo de las Delicias. It then passes Glorieta de Marineros, La Rábida, Palos de la Frontera, Avenida El Cid, Plaza Juan de Austria, Menéndez y Pelayo, Recaredo, María Auxiliadora, Ronda de Capuchinos, Muñoz León, the Andalusian Parliament, Resolana, Glorieta Duquesa Cayetana de Alba, Torneo, Arjona and Paseo de Cristóbal Colón before returning to Las Delicias.

The notable change is not a new district but the reversal of the direction used in recent years. That changes the order of the turns, when the longer avenues appear and how familiar landmarks feel. Returning participants should not copy old splits or pacing from memory. The 2026 signs matter more than experience of the previous orientation.

The organiser calls the distance approximately 8,500 metres. It is not presented as a certified 10K and no officially measured result will be produced. Any difference on a GPS watch combines the line actually run through a huge field, cornering and device error. The number can preserve a personal memory, but it is not equivalent to a result from a measured, timed race.

Why this is not a night for chasing a PB

The regulations describe the event as participatory, festive, recreational, family-oriented and tourist-focused. Although they include awards for the first finishers in several categories, they also state that there will be no classification or timing system. A recreational runner will not receive a chip time or official finishing position to compare with other performances.

A 26,000-person field will also give the opening kilometre a collective rhythm. Expect different paces, groups, run-walk participants and overtaking in several directions. Weaving to recover seconds adds distance and contact risk without producing a recognised performance. It is smarter to accept the flow at the start and move forward only when broad spaces open.

The midnight closure leaves two hours from the starting signal. Dividing two hours by 8.5km gives an arithmetic reference of about 14:07 per kilometre, but that is not an official individual cut-off pace and does not account for how long each pen takes to cross the line. Anyone expecting to walk much of the course should start near the back, remain aware of the sweep vehicle and follow staff instructions.

Start pens: who enters the first group

There are two start pens. The first is intended for men with a sub-40-minute 10K and women with a sub-46-minute 10K. Assignment uses the best qualifying mark from the municipal #Sevilla10 series in 2024, 2025 or 2026. The organiser may also accept certified performances from other races according to the information available.

All other entrants go into the second pen. Bib number and pen allocation should arrive by email. Using the correct group is more than administration: it reduces abrupt speed differences and helps such a large start move with fewer sudden stops. The bib must remain visible on the chest and cannot be folded or modified.

Bib collection at Torre Sevilla

The runners’ fair is at Torre Sevilla. It is open continuously from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Wednesday 23, Thursday 24 and Friday 25 September. The race pack includes the bib, technical shirt and medal, plus any commercial products supplied by partners.

Personal collection: bring a national ID document, residence card, passport or driving licence.

Collection by someone else: requires prior electronic authorisation through the organiser’s designated link.

Under-18 entrants: must provide an official document proving age to collect the pack or authorise collection.

Friday: collection remains open until 9:00 pm, only one hour before the start.

Leaving collection until Friday evening allows little time to travel from Torre Sevilla, store the bag, eat or drink calmly and enter the assigned pen. Collecting earlier, where possible, keeps the final hour from becoming a logistical race.

Heat will shape the race strategy

The AEMET municipal forecast checked on 24 September gives Friday a low of 20°C and a high of 38°C, with no rain expected. The race starts three hours after the daytime yellow heat warning for the Seville countryside is due to end, but the precise 10:00 pm temperature can still change. Friday’s updated hourly forecast will matter more than the daily maximum alone.

Racing at night removes direct sun but not all the heat stored through a very hot afternoon. World Athletics advises combining acclimatisation, hydration, cooling and effort adjustment in warm conditions. One day before the event is too late to manufacture acclimatisation, but there is still time to avoid reaching the start tired, dehydrated or committed to cool-weather expectations.

Lower the opening ambition: regulate by breathing and perceived effort, not normal 10K pace.

Warm up close to the start: a short, progressive activation limits heat accumulation and time spent standing.

Arrive normally hydrated: drink regularly during the day instead of forcing a large volume shortly before the race.

Wear tested, lightweight clothing: there is no requirement to debut the event shirt during the race.

Stop for warning signs: dizziness, weakness, confusion, chest pain or disproportionate breathlessness require ending the effort and seeking assistance.

What to eat before a 10:00 pm start

The late schedule encourages a common mistake: eating normally all day, becoming hungry late and then having a large dinner too close to the start. A better approach is to keep the usual breakfast and lunch, schedule a familiar pre-race meal with enough digestion time and use only a rehearsed snack if hunger returns.

An 8.5km event does not demand an improvised carbohydrate load or compulsory gels. The priority is a calm stomach and normal energy availability. Avoid experimenting with high-fat meals, large fibre portions, supplements or drinks never used before running. Late caffeine can also disturb sleep long after the finish, even for runners who tolerate it in training.

Aid stations and race services

There will be a water point around halfway, which the organiser places near Muñoz León, and liquid refreshment after the finish. That makes water available when needed, but a busy station can cause sudden braking. Signal before changing direction, avoid cutting sharply across others and do not stop directly in front of runners continuing through.

The event provides medical care, liability and accident insurance for registered entrants, and a sweep vehicle. The rules prohibit taking part without the assigned bib, following the field by bicycle, scooter, skates or another vehicle, and running with dogs or other animals. Waste must be left in designated areas.

Moving through a field of 26,000

The municipal operation includes reserved space, diversions and road closures around Las Delicias, Glorieta de Buenos Aires and several points on the route before the race begins. Driving into the immediate area may be the least predictable option. Check the mobility plan, late public transport and the journey home before leaving.

Set a meeting point: reception and orientation can become difficult after a group is separated.

Do not block the route: if you need to stop, move progressively to the side and look before changing line.

Retain auditory awareness: if using headphones, keep the volume low enough to hear instructions and other runners.

Identify the return landmark: finishing at night among thousands makes an agreed reunion place genuinely useful.

A simple plan for running it well

During the opening minutes, let the field stretch. Keep the stride short, avoid reacting to every gap and use perceived effort as the reference. Through the middle, find a fluid rhythm and use broad avenues to pass without abrupt changes. Only in the final third should effort rise gradually, and only if temperature, breathing and legs remain under control.

Runners who want a personal record of the experience can start a watch when crossing the arch and use manual laps, but the number belongs in a training log as a personal time over an approximate course. Success here is not finding an artificial conversion to 10K. It is finishing in control, moving considerately through an enormous field and enjoying Seville without turning a popular celebration into a test the organiser never intended to provide.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the 2026 Nocturna del Guadalquivir?

The announced distance is approximately 8.5 kilometres. It should not be treated as a certified 10K.

Will there be chip timing and official results?

No. The regulations state that there will be no timing system or official general classification, although awards are listed for the first finishers in certain categories.

What time do the start pens open?

Access is scheduled from 9:00 pm and the race starts at 10:00 pm. Check the organiser’s email for your bib number and assigned pen.

Where is bib collection?

At the Torre Sevilla runners’ fair, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm through Friday 25 September. Collection by another person requires prior electronic authorisation.

Is water available during the race?

Yes. The organiser provides a water point around halfway and liquid refreshment after the finish.

Editorial note: schedule, course, participation, services and weather outlook checked on 24 September 2026.
