The 2026 Cursa de la Merc\u00e8 produced two very different races through central Barcelona. Roger S\u00faria settled a tightly packed men’s 10K with a slightly faster second half and won in an official 30:00. Douae Ouboukir, by contrast, was on her own early and clocked 32:49, a women’s course record. Around them, 17,200 entries across the three events made the 48th edition the largest in the race’s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, 20 September, the programme brought elite competition, mass-participation running and inclusion together through the 10K, the inclusive 2K and the family mile. The main race started on Carrer d’Arag\u00f3 near Pau Claris and finished in Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya after crossing the Eixample, Passeig de Sant Joan, the waterfront and Avinguda del Paral\u00b7lel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      These are official gun times. For S\u00faria, the timing system records 29:59 net and 30:00 official. Several reports published on Sunday gave Ouboukir 32:52, but the settled classification now shows 32:49 as both her gun and net time. This recap therefore uses 30:00 and 32:49 when listing the winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Roger S\u00faria wins with a second-half move<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The men’s race developed as a tactical contest. S\u00faria and Badia reached 5K in 15:01, Nouri followed in 15:03 and Nicol\u00e1s Fern\u00e1ndez crossed in 15:04. Four contenders were separated by only three seconds at halfway, with no definitive selection made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The decisive detail appears when the two halves are compared. S\u00faria covered the final 5K in approximately 14:58, while Badia needed 15:06 and Nouri 15:17. The winner did not build his advantage at the start. He ran the second half three seconds faster than the first and created the nine-second margin over the runner-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Mundo Deportivo’s race report<\/a> places the key move after the runners had cleared Paral\u00b7lel, one of the course’s more demanding sections. S\u00faria emerged with enough in reserve to change pace, broke clear and protected the gap to Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya. The official split supports that account: his win came from management and a late acceleration rather than an unsustainable opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Badia secured second in 30:09 and Nouri completed the podium in 30:20. Fern\u00e1ndez, part of the lead group for much of the race, finished fourth in 30:30. James Whelan’s 2025 men’s course record was never the central storyline this time; the interest came from direct racing for the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Douae Ouboukir turns the women’s race into a battle with the clock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      While the men waited, Ouboukir committed from the start. She reached halfway in 16:04, already 1:05 ahead of Oria de Rueda’s 17:09 and 1:06 clear of Cristina Silva’s 17:10. Victory was under control; the remaining question was how far she could lower the 33:39 record she had set in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ouboukir ran the second half in 16:45 and finished in 32:49, an official average of roughly 3:17 per kilometre. Her two halves differed by 41 seconds, yet the early cushion was large enough for a winning margin of 2:02. De Rueda took second in 34:51 and Silva finished only seven seconds later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Against the current official result, Ouboukir improved her 33:39 mark by 50 seconds. The 47-second reduction in early reports came from the initially circulated 32:52. The substance of the achievement is unchanged: she defended her title and cut a substantial amount from her own record in the second year of the route introduced in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A fast route that still rewards restraint before Paral\u00b7lel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The Cursa de la Merc\u00e8 retained the central route unveiled last year after more than two decades with the traditional Montju\u00efc-based course. According to the organisers, the 10K is certified by the Catalan Athletics Federation. It connects Carrer d’Arag\u00f3 with Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya, taking the race towards Passeig de Sant Joan and the waterfront before returning through Paral\u00b7lel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The winners showed two valid ways to race it. S\u00faria protected his options inside a group and found his best pace after halfway. Ouboukir used her superiority from the gun and accepted a slower second half after building a decisive lead. The shared lesson is more useful to a recreational runner than copying either elite script: reach Paral\u00b7lel with some effort in reserve and do not let the fast, central opening kilometres turn into a bet that cannot be sustained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      17,200 entries: a record scale, not a finisher count<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Organisers announced 17,200 entries across the 10K, inclusive race and family event, exceeding the 17,000 recorded in 2013. It is the largest number of bibs in Cursa de la Merc\u00e8 history and a substantial rise from the 14,500 participants announced in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The label matters: 17,200 is the combined entry total, not a confirmed count of 10K finishers. betev\u00e9<\/a> reported more than 17,000 athletes filling the streets and documented an incident-free morning, but the sources reviewed do not yet provide one settled finisher total that can replace the entry figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The scale also extended beyond the 10K. The programme included a 2K inclusive race and a non-competitive family mile. Nail Rodr\u00edguez Rasos led the inclusive classification in 10:19, one second ahead of Luis Rodr\u00edguez Santiago, while Francisco Castro Aymami placed third in 10:51.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A popular race tied to Barcelona’s festival and a charitable cause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      La Merc\u00e8 has an identity that is hard to separate from Barcelona. It is staged within the city’s main festival, runs through recognisable avenues and turns Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya into a meeting point for runners of very different levels. The red event shirts dominated a sunny morning that, according to the organiser’s assessment carried by betev\u00e9, ended without notable incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The social dimension was part of the entry too. The event’s charitable contribution went to Clowns Without Borders Spain, a Barcelona-born organisation supporting the emotional wellbeing of children in conflict, displacement and emergency settings. The record turnout therefore connected the city’s largest popular race with an inclusive programme and a defined community purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
