The 10K adds Santa Bárbara Castle, a section beside Postiguet beach and three major climbs on the official profile.

Alicante City Council’s 10 September presentation supplied a timely update: 1,088 runners have already entered, with 843 choosing the 10K and 245 the 5K, 25 days before race day. The combined capacity is 2,000. This guide covers the routes, differences between distances, start times, cut-offs, bib collection and the pacing demands of a race that is not designed for even splits.

Key details for the 2026 Alicante Castle Race

Date: Sunday, 4 October 2026.

Start: Calle Foguerer José Romeu Zarandieta, beside the Monte Tossal swimming pools.

Finish: Joaquín Villar Municipal Athletics Stadium.

5K: 9:00 am start, minimum age 14, a 30-minute cut-off at approximately 2.5km and a 1:15 overall limit.

10K: 9:30 am start, minimum age 16 and a 1:40 overall limit.

Current entry fee: €13, including a €1 charitable contribution, until 11:59 pm on 27 September or until places sell out.

Capacity: 2,000 participants across both distances, unless the organiser expands it.

Organisers: Alicante City Council and Nostresport Gestion Deportiva.

Those start times come from the official rules, the race FAQ and the council presentation. An Alicante Turismo event page shows them the other way around. As of 11 September, the strongest available references support 9:00 am for the 5K and 9:30 am for the 10K, but runners should check the organiser’s final communication during race week.

What makes the course different

The name is not decorative. The official map and course profiles place San Fernando Castle on the first climb in both races. The 10K continues to Santa Bárbara Castle, identified as its highest point, and still reserves a third climb before the finish. The 5K turns off at Avenida Alfonso el Sabio and heads back towards the stadium for an uphill finish.

This changes how runners should read the watch. Two athletes capable of the same pace on a flat race can produce very different results depending on their uphill economy, descending control and the energy they retain for the final ascent. Official material calls the 10K demanding and the 5K moderate. It does not publish total elevation gain, so there is no sound basis for inventing a flat-course conversion or promising personal-best conditions.

The 5K: one main climb and little time to repair mistakes

The 5K uses the opening section of the long course. From the start it moves through the streets around Monte Tossal towards San Fernando Castle, then descends towards Alfonso el Sabio and loops around Plaza de los Luceros before joining General Marvá, Salamanca, Condes de Soto Ameno and Doctor Rico on the way to the stadium.

Its difficulty lies in how concentrated the effort is, not simply its duration. The first climb arrives while the field is still compact, encouraging runners to spend too much energy to hold position. There is less distance after the descent to recover from an aggressive start, and the profile announces an uphill finish. The best opening-kilometre reference is therefore not average target pace but an effort that lets you crest without losing form or breathing control.

The 2.5km control must be passed within 30 minutes. For arithmetic context, that is 12:00 per kilometre to the checkpoint; it is not a recommended race pace because climbing and descending distribute the effort unevenly. The overall limit is 75 minutes, and the official FAQ says walking is allowed, although walkers are advised to choose the 5K and start at the back.

The 10K: three climbs and a deceptively favourable section

The 10K shares the opening passage around San Fernando and continues along Alfonso el Sabio towards Jaime II. It then climbs Santa Bárbara, descends via Jorge Juan and Virgen del Socorro, passes Postiguet beach and enters Rambla de Méndez Núñez. The return uses Alfonso el Sabio again, followed by Estación, Salamanca, Condes de Soto Ameno and Doctor Rico before the stadium.

Postiguet and the Rambla may look like the perfect place to recover everything lost on the climbs. That is the trap: accelerating without restraint after Santa Bárbara can leave a runner with no response on the third ascent. The favourable section is better used to normalise stride, drink and regain control than to chase the watch’s average pace all at once.

The 1:40 limit represents an arithmetic average of 10:00 per kilometre. It should not become a schedule of equal splits. A runner expecting to use much of that allowance should build margin on runnable sections without forcing the descents, reaching the final third with the ability to alternate running and purposeful walking if the gradient demands it.

How to choose between the 5K and 10K

Choose the 5K if this is your first race with a sustained climb, recent training has centred on shorter outings, or you prefer to manage one main ascent.

Choose the 10K if you have completed rolling runs of at least an hour, can descend under control after climbing and have trained to repeat efforts on inclines.

Do not decide from a flat PB. A fast road 5K or 10K alone does not show that your legs can absorb three climbs and their descents.

Review the past six weeks. The suitable distance is the one resembling your actual recent load, not the training you hoped to complete.

Observe the minimum ages. Minors need signed authorisation: from age 14 in the 5K and 16 in the 10K.

The current entry distribution also supplies context. Of the 1,088 registrations announced by Alicante City Council, 77.5% are for the 10K and 22.5% for the 5K. Those are calculations from the published count, not separate quotas or a sporting reason to select the longer race.

Three weeks to prepare for the hills without overloading

With three weeks remaining, there is no benefit in compressing a complete training block. If the base fitness exists, the available time is useful for rehearsing specific demands: climbing without chasing pace, adjusting foot placement downhill, recovering after an incline and finishing strongly after the legs have accumulated load.

One hill session per week: controlled repetitions lasting 45 seconds to three minutes, with enough recovery and without turning every climb into a sprint.

One rolling easy run: conversational effort on easier sections and steady effort uphill, particularly useful for the 10K.

Practise descending: use short steps, look ahead and favour control over speed; disorganised descending loads the quadriceps before the finish.

Rehearse the finish: end an easy run with a short climb at race effort, stopping well before exhaustion.

Reduce during race week: lower volume, retain familiar intensity in small doses and avoid experiments with shoes or strength work.

This is an adjustable framework. Someone who has not run consistently cannot manufacture the adaptation in three weeks by suddenly increasing distance and climbing. Pain that changes gait, dizziness, chest pain or disproportionate shortness of breath require stopping exercise and seeking appropriate assessment.

Race-day pacing plan

In both distances, the first climb should feel controlled. Allow kilometre pace to slow instead of trying to correct it on the gradient. A short stride, stable posture and sustainable effort let you begin descending with coordination. Gaining two positions uphill only to lose many more downhill is a poor trade.

In the 5K, build effort gradually after Luceros if recovery is good and preserve one change of pace for the finish. In the 10K, treat Santa Bárbara as the tactical centre of the race: crest with a margin, descend without sharp braking, use Postiguet and the Rambla to reorganise, then decide how much you can invest on the final climb.

Start pens are advisory and do not require proof of a qualifying time. The 5K separates runners estimating under 22 minutes; the 10K uses 45 minutes. Choosing the realistic pen improves flow and reduces the temptation to match the effort of faster runners around you.

Entry and the APSA inclusion project

The official entry platform lists a €13 fee for either distance in the current period. It includes a €1 contribution to APSA’s inclusive-sport programme. APSA supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Registration closes at 11:59 pm on 27 September or sooner if places sell out. The rules allow a refund for documented accident or injury when requested at least ten calendar days before the race, minus bank costs. The FAQ, however, says there are no refunds and instead offers a participant transfer until one week before or a distance change until 15 days before. Because the two pages conflict on refunds, request any arrangement in writing and retain the organiser’s confirmation.

Bib collection and reaching the start

Friday, 2 October: 5:00-8:00 pm at Joaquín Villar Stadium’s main entrance, accessed from C/ Hondón de las Nieves.

Saturday, 3 October: 11:00 am-2:00 pm and 5:00-8:00 pm at the same location.

Documents: personal identification and proof of entry.

Collection by another person: written authorisation and a copy of the entrant’s identification; digital versions are accepted.

Exception for runners from outside Alicante: the FAQ allows bib and shirt collection until 8:30 am on Sunday, but not the rest of the runner’s bag.

The organiser asks participants to arrive at least 30 minutes early, plan access and parking, and avoid driving where possible. This matters particularly for the 5K: its official start is 9:00 am and exceptional Sunday bib collection closes only half an hour earlier.

Aid, services and safety

Entry includes a bib with disposable timing chip, shirt, runner’s bag, gun and net timing, accident insurance and finish-line refreshments. The 10K also has a liquid aid point halfway. A bag drop, showers and medical service are available. A finisher medal is not currently planned.

October can still bring high temperatures in Alicante, and the rules ask runners to adapt pace to actual conditions. It is too early to attach a forecast now. Check the updated outlook during race week, arrive hydrated and adjust expectations if heat, humidity or wind are present. The halfway water in the 10K supplements a sensible plan; it cannot fix poor pre-race hydration by itself.

Pets are prohibited, except guide dogs, and baby strollers are not allowed. Participants cannot be followed by bicycle, motorcycle or car. The bib must remain visible, and waste may only be discarded in designated areas; dropping containers elsewhere can lead to disqualification.

Frequently asked questions

What time do the 5K and 10K start?

The rules, FAQ and council presentation say 9:00 am for the 5K and 9:30 am for the 10K. One tourism page reverses them, so confirm the timetable on the race website during event week.

Is this a personal-best course?

The official profile shows one main climb and an uphill finish in the 5K, and three major climbs in the 10K. Without official certification or total elevation data, it should not be marketed as a fast or PB course.

When does registration close?

At 11:59 pm on 27 September or when the combined 2,000 places are filled. The council announced 1,088 entries on 10 September.

Can I walk the 5K?

Yes, according to the FAQ, provided you start at the back and respect the 30-minute checkpoint at 2.5km and the 1:15 overall limit.

Where do I collect my bib?

At Joaquín Villar Stadium on Friday, 2 October, or Saturday, 3 October. Only runners arriving from outside Alicante have the stated exception to collect the bib and shirt until 8:30 am on Sunday.

Editorial note: route, entry, timetable and service details checked on 13 September 2026.
