The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) has announced its intention to mark 15 September each year as World Marathon Day, commemorating the letter in which Michel Bréal proposed a race from Marathon to Athens in 1894.

The initiative comes with something more tangible than a label. AIMS has funded the complete restoration of Bréal’s grave at Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris and a new commemorative headstone. The restored site is due to be unveiled on Tuesday 15 September 2026.

The announcement also offers a useful chance to untangle a history often told as a blend of legend, ancient sport and the modern distance. The marathon was not an event at the ancient Olympic Games, the first Olympic race in 1896 was not 42.195km, and Bréal was not even a runner. That is precisely what makes his role so unusual.

What AIMS has announced

In its official announcement, AIMS says it intends to establish 15 September as an annual celebration of the marathon. The association, which represents 470 marathons and distance races in more than 120 countries, is linking the date to Michel Bréal’s contribution and has also named him its honorary “Founder Emeritus”. AIMS says this is the first time it has granted the title.

The 2026 ceremony is scheduled for 14:00-15:00 at Montparnasse. The restoration has been organised jointly by AIMS, ARTMARATHON and the Michel Bréal Society. The programme includes contributions from Bréal’s family, historians and representatives of the international marathon movement.

The scope matters. AIMS is promoting a worldwide commemoration within the distance-running community; its announcement does not present the date as an international day formally proclaimed by the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee or World Athletics. It does not change race rules, calendars or course-certification standards.

Why 15 September was chosen

The date is not the anniversary of the first Olympic marathon. It commemorates a letter dated 15 September 1894, sent by Michel Bréal to Pierre de Coubertin from Glion, Switzerland, shortly after the Sorbonne congress that had set the modern Olympic revival in motion.

Bréal suggested exploring a race from Marathon to the Pnyx in Athens, giving the new event a classical character, and offered to donate a cup for its winner. Coubertin embraced the idea and the Athens 1896 programme included an athletics event called the marathon. Bréal commissioned and personally paid for the silver trophy awarded to Spyridon Louis, winner of that first Olympic race.

World Athletics’ historical account identifies Bréal as the linguist and historian who introduced the idea around the 1894 congress. Material preserved in the Olympic library also traces the connection between his proposal, the letter and the cup.

World Marathon Day therefore marks the documented conception of the modern event, not a supposed date on which Pheidippides ran. That distinction may sound small, but it is central to telling the marathon’s origin accurately.

The modern marathon was not an ancient Olympic event

The popular story begins with the Greek messenger Pheidippides, or Philippides, who is said to have run from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens to announce victory over the Persians before dying. Ancient accounts vary, including versions in which his great journey was between Athens and Sparta. Treating them as a precise report of a 42.195km run compresses legend and later sporting history into one neat but misleading line.

What is well established is that the marathon as a race began with the first modern Olympic Games. World Athletics says the Athens 1896 event was devised over roughly 40km to celebrate ancient Greece. Spyridon Louis won on 10 April 1896 in the Panathenaic Stadium and turned a new idea into one of the defining stories of the Olympic revival.

This clarification does not drain the legend of its power. It simply separates three different layers: the tradition of a messenger associated with the Battle of Marathon, Bréal’s modern proposal in 1894, and the later evolution towards today’s regulated distance.

From roughly 40km to today’s 42.195km

The first Olympic marathon did not cover the distance runners now see on watches and race signs. Early routes varied. At the London 1908 Olympic Games, the race covered 26 miles and 385 yards, or 42.195km, after the start and finish were adjusted around Windsor and the White City Stadium.

World Athletics’ official discipline history dates the standardisation of that measurement to 1921. Put simply, Bréal’s letter explains why the race exists; London 1908 helps explain why it is that long; and 1921 marks the distance becoming the standard.

15 September 1894: Bréal writes to Coubertin and proposes the race.

10 April 1896: Spyridon Louis wins the first Olympic marathon, over roughly 40km.

1908: London uses the 26-mile, 385-yard course.

1921: 42.195km is standardised as the marathon distance.

15 September 2026: AIMS unveils the restored grave and seeks to begin the annual commemoration.

A global initiative with a Spanish connection

The initiative has a direct link to Spanish running. AIMS president Paco Borao is also president of SD Correcaminos, the club behind the Valencia Marathon and Valencia Half Marathon. His career connects the management of one of Spain’s leading events with the international distance-racing network.

The Valencia Marathon organisation records that Borao became AIMS president in 2010 after joining its board in 1996. In the World Marathon Day announcement, he says the intention is to secure permanent recognition for Bréal’s legacy.

That does not make the commemoration a Spanish project, but it puts a figure from Valencia’s marathon at the centre of its launch. For runners in Spain who build their autumn around Valencia, Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián or Málaga, that connection brings a global story closer to home.

What changes for runners and races

In 2026, the effect is mainly cultural. The announcement does not create a single flagship race, require organisers to stage activities or tell runners to cover 42.195km on the day. AIMS is proposing a shared date that its members, clubs, museums, federations and runners can adopt in their own ways.

For organisers: it offers an annual moment to explain heritage, recognise volunteers and discuss the future of their events.

For clubs and crews: it can support a history session, social run or inclusive activity without becoming another compulsory challenge.

For runners: it is an invitation to understand the distance beyond finish times, race entries and training plans.

For media: it creates an opportunity to test familiar myths and explain the marathon’s development from reliable sources.

World Marathon Day’s real reach will become clearer after the Paris ceremony: how many races adopt it, what historical resources AIMS produces, and whether the date gains visible continuity in 2027 and beyond.

How to mark it without running a marathon

A day devoted to the marathon should not be reduced to accumulating 42km without context. For most runners, attempting the distance without preparation would be a poor way to honour it. There are more sensible ways to engage with the event’s community and history.

Explore the history of your local marathon or interview its long-serving volunteers.

Share an easy run with people training for their first 42K and respect their pace.

Learn how a race course is measured before describing performances as records.

Support a local event by volunteering or cheering at a quieter point on the course.

Read about women’s marathon pioneers and remember that the women’s event did not join the Olympic programme until Los Angeles 1984.

Frequently asked questions

Is World Marathon Day an official international observance?

It is an annual initiative announced by AIMS. The statement does not say it has been proclaimed by the United Nations, the IOC or World Athletics.

Why would it be held on 15 September?

Because Michel Bréal dated his letter to Pierre de Coubertin on that day in 1894, proposing a race from Marathon to Athens and offering a cup for the winner.

Did Michel Bréal invent the 42.195km distance?

No. Bréal proposed the modern event. The 42.195km measurement is associated with the London 1908 Olympic course and was standardised in 1921.

Was the first marathon held in ancient Greece?

Not as an Olympic competition. The sporting event entered the programme of the first modern Games in Athens in 1896, inspired by stories surrounding the Battle of Marathon.

A date for remembering where the 42K came from

The value of World Marathon Day is not in adding another obligation to a runner’s calendar. It is in recognising that one of sport’s most universal events began with a specific proposal, written by someone who never raced it, and then changed for decades before taking its current form.

If the AIMS initiative takes root, every 15 September can become a reason to look beyond the clock: towards Bréal and Louis, but also towards the course measurers, aid-station teams, volunteers and final finishers who turn 42.195km into a collective experience.

AIMS plans to mark 15 September as World Marathon Day.
