It also comes barely three months after Kwizera&#8217;s striking 26:01 at the Madrid Vintage Run, a faster time achieved on a course ineligible for record purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prague also produced an extraordinary finish: the leader went the wrong way within sight of the line and Kwizera took the opportunity to win by one second. Yet the most useful reading extends beyond that twist. The margins were tiny: only nine seconds separated first from fifth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a race still open at the final turn was decided<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RunCzech&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runczech.com\/en\/events\/birell-10k-night-race-prague-2026\/news-from-the-race\">official race feed<\/a> described a tightly packed lead group at 5K, with more than ten runners still close. The field thinned later, but nobody built enough of a margin to settle the race before the finishing straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victor Kipruto Kiprono reached the final metres in front and took a wrong turn. The organiser confirmed the mistake in its live coverage. Kwizera stayed on the correct line, crossed first in 27:15 and Owen Korir also moved ahead of Kiprono. The final RunCzech classification and the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldathletics.org\/competition\/calendar-results\/results\/7236035\">World Athletics result<\/a> agree on the podium times: 27:15, 27:16 and 27:18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those results correct early reports that gave the two Kenyan runners 27:17 or 27:20. Once an official classification is available, its figures should take precedence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What 27:15 means compared with Said Mechaal&#8217;s record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mechaal ran 27:25 in Valencia on 11 January. Both World Athletics and Valencia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdmvalencia.es\/el-10k-valencia-se-corona-con-tres-nuevos-records-en-una-jornada-historica\/\">Municipal Sports Foundation<\/a> identified that performance as the Spanish record. Kwizera has gone ten seconds faster, an improvement of one second per kilometre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In average pace, that is a move from 2:44.5\/km to 2:43.5\/km. The difference looks small, but at this level it means sustaining roughly 22km\/h for the entire race. A perfectly even halfway split would be 13:37.5, although no official individual split has been published to show that Kwizera actually paced the race that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 27:15 was not a Prague course record either. The organiser still lists Geoffrey Koech&#8217;s 27:02 as the event best. The significance of Kwizera&#8217;s result lies in the Spanish national benchmark, rather than in being the fastest performance ever recorded at this race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why 27:15 can count as a record while Madrid&#8217;s 26:01 cannot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kwizera had already run a substantially faster 10K this season. On 31 May he won the Madrid Vintage Run in 26:01, thirty seconds inside the recognised world record at the time. But that route had a net descent far beyond the permitted limit for a road record and widely separated start and finish points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SnapRace has previously explained <a href=\"https:\/\/snaprace.app\/blog\/en\/kwizera-2601-madrid-vintage-run-10k-not-world-record\/\">why the Madrid 26:01 cannot be a world record<\/a>. The Birell 10K is a World Athletics Label race and its results sit on the international calendar. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundodeportivo.com\/running\/20260907\/1004224230\/record-espana-10k-nuevo-nombre-propio-rodrigue-kwizera-triunfo-birell-10k-night-race-praga.html\">Spanish specialist media<\/a> are reporting 27:15 as a new national record. Even so, a record performance and a formally ratified record are not precisely the same stage of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kwizera&#8217;s nationality and a database discrepancy worth explaining<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/doc.php?id=BOE-A-2026-9494&amp;lang=es\">Official State Gazette<\/a> published Royal Decree 364\/2026 on 1 May, granting Rodrigue Kwizera Spanish nationality by naturalisation. Before the Prague start, RunCzech expressly said that he was now representing Spain, and its final classification identifies him with the code ESP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Athletics result page, checked on 8 September, still displays BDI, the code for Burundi. That divergence may reflect the time needed to synchronise or validate a change across international databases; by itself, it does not establish that the performance has been rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For accuracy, the most precise wording at this date is <strong>a 27:15 performance reported as the new Spanish record, pending visible formal confirmation from the RFEA<\/strong>. Once the federation updates its list or publishes ratification, that qualification can be simplified. The caution does not diminish the performance; it keeps the race result separate from the final administrative step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the result changes for Spanish distance running<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The immediate consequence is that Spain has another runner capable of competing in an international group below 27:20. Kwizera did not merely post a fast time: he beat runners who finished in 27:16, 27:18 and 27:19, in a race that remained undecided beyond the ninth kilometre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also shifts the domestic reference point. Mechaal broke new ground with 27:25 in January and went under 28 minutes again in Prague. Having the previous record holder in the same race helps frame 27:15 without exaggeration: it is a ten-second improvement on a mark set less than eight months earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not automatically make Kwizera the favourite over every distance, nor can the result simply be transferred to the track, half marathon or championship racing.
