It is an asphalt ultradistance climb linking Granada with Sierra Nevada and finishing near Pico Veleta, in a setting where the effort changes as the kilometres, gradient and altitude build. The 42nd edition takes place on Sunday, August 9, with three formats: a 50K individual climb, a 25+25K relay and an 11K Mini Climb.

For many runners, the appeal is obvious: run one of Europe’s highest paved routes, start in the city and finish close to the 3,398m altitude of Pico Veleta. But that is exactly why the race deserves a careful reading. Marathon fitness is not enough on its own, and being strong uphill is only part of the equation. The real challenge is choosing the right format, training specifically for long climbing and preparing for a race that can start warm and end with cold, wind, rain or a clear sense that oxygen is harder to come by.

What runners can enter at Pico Veleta 2026

According to the official Pico Veleta race information, the event takes place on August 9 and is organised by Club Atletismo Maracena. The main race starts at 7:00 from the Templete del Paseo del Salón in Granada and climbs for around 50 km to the area near Pico Veleta. The organisation lists 2,718m of positive elevation on the general information page and 2,705m on the specific route page; for runners, the practical point is simple: almost the whole second half is sustained climbing.

Individual climb: 50 km, 7:00 start, 600-runner cap including relay entries, finish closing at 15:30 and an 8 h 30 min time limit.

Relay: 50 km in two-runner teams, split into 25+25 km with the handover at Cruce del Dornajo.

Mini Climb: roughly 10.8-11 km, 10:00 start from the Hoya de la Mora barrier and finish in the Veleta area, with around 870-890m of climbing.

Registration is closed, as confirmed by the official website. With five days to go, the priority is no longer finding a bib: registered runners should review final logistics, collect their bib on August 8 and check the organiser’s latest instructions and the high-altitude weather forecast before travelling.

Why the 50K is not just a long marathon

The first mistake would be to see “50 km” and compare it with a long marathon. Pico Veleta is a different kind of effort. The route begins with a more runnable section towards Cenes de la Vega and Pinos Genil, but then turns into a persistent climb towards Sierra Nevada. The official 50K route page describes an early false-flat section followed by almost 39 km of continuous uphill running, with some flatter moments that do not change the character of the race.

That means marathon pace is not a useful direct reference. In a race like this, the goal is not to hold pace; it is to preserve economy. Running too brightly in the first 10 km may feel free, but the cost arrives later, when the gradient accumulates, oxygen feels less available and every aid station requires fast decisions about drinking, eating or adjusting clothing.

The organisation breaks the course into sectors and warns that the opening section can be deceptive. Its sector-by-sector route advice stresses the importance of reaching the halfway point, around km 25, with real reserves. For recreational runners, that is a useful mental rule: if you are already surviving at El Dornajo, the final part can become very long.

Cut-offs matter more than GPS pace

The individual climb has cut-off points that force runners to think in sections. The rules list references at km 10, km 18, km 25, km 32.7, km 38 and the finish. The final time limit is 8 h 30 min, close to an average of 10 min/km, but that number can mislead runners because the effort is not evenly distributed. The race becomes harder as it climbs.

The sensible strategy is to pass the early checks with margin, but without spending the energy you need higher up. If you are preparing for the race, do not rely only on long runs. Include prolonged uphill blocks, strong hiking on steep gradients, controlled downhill work to protect your legs and outings where you practise fuelling with the same kit you plan to carry on race day.

Altitude: the invisible factor that changes the effort

Altitude does not hit all at once, but it becomes part of the race. World Athletics explains in its guide to altitude training that as altitude increases, atmospheric pressure drops and the body has a harder time transferring oxygen into the blood. For runners, the practical sensation may be heavier breathing, less responsive legs and a higher perceived effort at paces that would feel manageable at home.

Not every participant needs an altitude training camp to finish, but the effect should be respected. If you can travel with some margin, sleep in the area and avoid arriving straight from sea level at the last minute, that helps. If you cannot, accept that the final kilometres should not be run using the same pace or heart-rate expectations as a coastal race. Your compass should be perceived effort, breathing and the ability to keep eating and drinking.

Warm below, cold above: prepare for two races

The organisation summarises the weather challenge clearly: as a general rule, the race can be warm until the final 10 km, but from the Hoya de la Mora barrier onwards conditions may bring cold, rain, hail or strong wind. That mix makes kit part of the strategy, not a box-ticking exercise.

Lower down, the risk is starting too fast and dehydrating before the decisive section. Higher up, the risk is arriving empty, wet or under-protected. World Athletics, in its Beat the Heat document, recommends preparing for heat with progressive exposure, a hydration plan and cooling strategies where appropriate. For Veleta, that needs to be combined with a belt or pack that lets you carry a cup or soft flask, sun protection, a cap, electrolytes and a useful windproof layer if the weather turns.

The common mandatory item is clear: a collapsible cup or soft flask, because cups are not supplied at aid stations. The organisation also recommends sunscreen, electrolytes, sunglasses, a small first-aid kit, a windproof jacket depending on the forecast and a mobile phone. In a race with this profile, carrying just enough does not mean carrying the bare minimum. It means carrying what can realistically solve the problems you are likely to face.

Individual, relay or Mini Climb?

The individual climb is for runners with solid endurance and climbing experience. You do not need to come from technical trail running, because the surface is asphalt, but you do need to tolerate many hours of uphill effort. It suits runners who have prepared for marathons or ultras, trained long climbs and know how to fuel before hunger becomes a problem.

The 25+25 relay can be a very smart choice. The first runner takes the start from Granada and the section towards El Dornajo; the second runner gets the higher, more alpine and more specific half. It is not an “easy half race”. It is a different way to experience Veleta, useful for runners who want to test the format without committing to the full 50 km yet.

The Mini Climb deserves its own respect. It is 11 km, yes, but with around 870-890m of climbing from Hoya de la Mora to the finish area. It can be ideal for mountain runners who want an intense experience, trained companions or runners who prefer to concentrate the challenge into altitude and the final gradient. It should not be treated like a short fun run: the slope and height completely change the effort.

A practical plan for arriving ready

Train long climbs: use sustained hills, mountain roads or a treadmill with incline. The goal is steady effort, not only explosive hill repeats.

Practise strong hiking: on steep gradients, purposeful walking can be more efficient than forcing a broken run.

Rehearse fuelling: decide how often you will take gels, bars, electrolytes or real food. On a continuous climb, eating late is costly.

Do not use untested kit: cup, soft flask, belt, pack, socks, cap and windproof layer should all be tested before race day.

Plan logistics: bib pickup is on August 8 at Hotel MACIÀ Real de la Alhambra, and bibs are not handed out on race day.

Check the forecast up high, not just in Granada: city temperatures do not describe what you may find near Veleta.

The key question before entering

Pico Veleta 2026 has something recreational runners understandably love: it is epic, recognisable and easy to explain. “Running from Granada up to Veleta” almost sounds like a dare. But the best way to respect a race like this is not to reduce it to a single line. You need to understand its cut-offs, altitude, weather swings and muscular demand.

If you have endurance, train climbs and pace well, the 50K can be a memorable experience. If you want a more cautious entry point, the relay and Mini Climb both offer serious character. In all three formats, the goal should not only be reaching the finish. It should be reaching it having run with judgement. At Veleta, the mountain begins long before you see it up close.

Official Pico Veleta 2026 race information.

Official 50K Individual and Relay route information.

Official Mini Climb 11K information.

Official sector-by-sector route advice.

Official Pico Veleta website: current registration status and last-minute notices.

World Athletics: altitude training basics.

World Athletics: Beat the Heat.

Pico Veleta 2026 takes place on August 9 in Granada with a 50K individual race, 25+25K relay and 11K Mini Climb.
